NEST was completed in 2012 : Located at Mililani Ike Elementary School on Oahu Hawaii. The school mascot is the Pueo (owl). The work was meant to be a protector (Aumakua) of the children as well as a metaphor for leaving the nest or home, growing up and experiencing life. The DOE component involved working with the science class to make shadow puppet nature videos about insects, each class a different insect. It also involved the music class which created stop motion animation with background music performed by the students. At the dedication I heard a thousand children singing. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house.
Funded by: Art in public places program in tandem with the DOE. Artists In The Schools program, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts public commission.
